FAQs about prison officer overtime pay
? Do I need to know my hourly rate? +
No. Use the Salary → Hourly helper on the calculator. Enter your annual salary and weekly hours and we’ll estimate your hourly rate using: annual ÷ (52 × weekly hours).
? Why is my take-home lower than expected? +
Overtime is additional earnings, so it can be taxed at your marginal rate depending on your total income. National Insurance (and pension, if selected) can also reduce the net figure. This tool provides a guide, not payroll advice.
? Are prison officer overtime rates always 1.25 / 1.33 / 1.5 / 2.0? +
These are common patterns you’ll hear (and we provide them as presets), but enhancements can vary by establishment, contract and circumstances. If yours differs, use the Custom multiplier option and match your payslip / local policy.
? What is Payment Plus? +
Some prisons use a flat hourly rate model for extra hours (often referred to as Payment Plus). In the calculator, choose Payment Plus and use the hourly figure that applies to you (we suggest £22/hour as a common reference point, but you can edit it).
? Does this include pension and student loan deductions? +
Pension is optional here. Student loan isn’t included yet. The goal is to provide a fast estimate without collecting sensitive payroll details.
? Can I estimate overtime after tax for Scotland / NI? +
Yes. Choose your region in the calculator. Scotland uses different income tax bands; NI also differs compared with Great Britain. Selecting the right region makes the estimate more realistic.
