Inflation rises to 3.5%: the figure that sets the April 2027 pension increase
The ONS says CPI rose by 3.5% in the 12 months to September 2026, up from 3.1% in August. September CPI is the figure public service pensions follow, so Civil Service pensions in payment for a full year are expected to rise by 3.5% in April 2027, about £420 on a £12,000 pension. HM Treasury confirms the rate in the 2027 Order early next year. The 3.5% 2026/27 pay award is now level with inflation.
McCloud remedy: Cabinet Office says the March 2027 target for remaining cases is no longer achievable
Civil Service World reports a letter from Cabinet Office permanent secretary Cat Little to the Public Accounts and Public Administration committees saying the previously targeted end-March 2027 delivery date for the remaining McCloud remedy cases is "no longer achievable". The government is validating Capita's delivery plan, with independent assurance from Grant Thornton, and says it will publish a revised timeline for each affected group. No new date has been given. Active and deferred officers still make their remedy choice at retirement.
Sentencing Act early-release changes start in stages from 1 October
The Prison Reform Trust's guide (updated September 2026) says the new early-release model starts on 1 October 2026 for the shortest sentences, with later tranches from 13 October and 10 November and through to June 2027, after exclusions announced on 4 and 30 August. It warns further changes or delays cannot be ruled out. No official statement on what it means for prison staffing or pay has been found.
